Chinese PTZ IP Cameras

Jan 12, 2011

This is a risky task that I had in mind for months: Create a table with the existing manufacturers of PTZ IP Cameras that are using the same casing as the Foscam FI8908W.

First a word of caution:
- this is an inaccurate snapshot of what exists at a given time
- it is a work in progress
- it is not (meant to be) exhaustive.

- I could only test and verify the older FI8908W Foscam information and firmware procedure as I don't have any other (non-)brand of IP camera.

I would like to make this table accurate enough so people can identify which camera they have, when time comes for them to request support or firmware for it, and maybe also what addresses to use within a recovery.  I don't have the storage and time to collect all of the standard and recovery firmwares, but you can check some repository like IntEx's located in  my Recommended Reading section (right column).

Your help is welcome!
If you had a positive experience in recoverying any IP camera, please leave a comment with the addresses used and, if possible, a download location for the recovery files. Any correction you may think of for the spreadsheet below, please let me know.
Thanks!

  1. I bought one on ebay and the company is wanscam. Can't find any firmware for it. I've bricked mine with some of the Foscam firmware.

  3. There are two different versions at dealextreme (booth ordered as sku26358). One comes with the foscam-ish firmware (I've already updated to the newest foscam fw) and one with UI looks like (and versioned like) Heden (Visioncam). I don't brave enough to try to update this last one.

  4. I see these 2 models returned when querying for sku26358, but the detail of the model with a white box appears acutally as 29285 which turns out to be the wired version of 29014.
So they should be from http://www.maygion.com, not compatible with Foscam firmware (I think the chip size is smaller) but at least the developper seems to be making new fw from time to time.

  5. Hi.

I have the Dealextreme.com SKU 26358, but I could not unbrick my camera with the mentioned files. Only using the files and addresses from Foscam (oem).

If someone has the same problem, please, keep us posted.

    Thanks for this post !

I hooked up the jtag. It looks like I have the one with the smaller flash/ram.

It loaded, but the ipcam tool never saw it again. I rebooted the camera and it pops back up in the ipcamtool, but still says no webui detected. I tried updating it again, and watched the terminal this time. Right after flashing, some stuff pops up in the terminal then this code pops up and locks up the camera.

  15. Hey bubbah & gadget victim team. Thanks for this great and useful site. I know this is a bit off-topic but I've not seen such comprehensive IP camera coverage and information anywhere else on the web so I'd figure I'd ask.

Is there any possibility with Foscam devices for personal modification of firmware? Specifically, I am looking to adjust the camera's abilities to be able to capture and send/store an image roughly every 30, 60 or 120 seconds in an on-going, indefinite manner for the means of analyzing the flow and availability of parking spaces. I am interested as to whether anyone here would have any insight as to best method for going about such a task. I'm not an expert coder but I have some programming ability.

Thanks for any help you can provide and your continued dedication to the IPcam community.

  16. Hi,
there are several IP camera clients that offer similar features and work with Foscam models. Look at the post "third party software for ip camereas" in this blog.
If you fancy developping your own app, there's also a CGI SDK document available from the "firmware history" page. It's a bit outdated and I asked several times for an new version to Foscam but they always reply "we're working on it..."

I wondered if you could point to a place where i can find out how to edit the web pages especialy the login one thats terible!!!

Also a friend of mine has just got a clone foscam which has in "alarm" a grid that you can draw so only movement in the said grid will be picked up has anybody got a firmware for foscam with this built in??

Strange thing is the easyn super client no longer works hmmmm (on laptop)

    Ta

  24. @Brogan
You could still try the "super client " from BSTI, but I think that with time they all introduce some check code to prevent their utility from working with competitors hardware.

As for customizing the webui, I'm not aware of a safe working method to change it or even just replace the bitmaps like the loginbg2.jpg. Foscam probably has a doc on customizing the firmware for its re-branding distributors but I doubt they'd release it to us.

Foscam confirmed that they still work on the firmware, and maybe they'll add such watch zones in the future. In the meantime you'll need to rely on a PC software.
    Cheers!

Recently bought a cam from DX, SKU-54683 (http://www.dealextreme.com/p/300kp-security-wireless-cctv-ip-camera-w-10-led-night-vision-microphone-motion-detection-white-54683)
The Web Ui / FW are kind a crapy so I’m looking for a newer version.
    The embedded FW are:
    Device Firmware Version 0.22.2.35
Device Embeded Web UI Version 0.5.4.1

Q: Is there a compatible FW for this device? (Foscam etc.)

  27. My camera is from Storage Options http://www.storageoptions.com/products/ip-cameras/ip-night-day-camera

It looks like yet another Foscam clone and is probably manufactured by EasyN.

    Device Firmware Version 4.22.2.36
Device Embeded Web UI Version 4.5.3.44

Although my camera is not bricked, I am still interested to explore the options for connecting to the camera and playing around with some settings. However, so far I haven't got lucky in locating any firmware for this particular camera.

    ReplyDelete
  28. @Maris
if it's like the EasyN then it should correspond to the F-series (FS613-A), for which you will find some related downloads here: http://www.easynp.com/Download.asp?Page=2
Have a look at their SDK document
You may contact them directly to obtain new firmware but as it is re-branded, they'll probaby want you to deal directly with the support of storageoptions

    ReplyDelete
  29. @Bubbah

Right you are! I contacted both companies, but unfortunately EasyN could not verify that it is a camera manufactured by them and Storage Options were reluctant to send me any firmware. Their excuse was that if I experience some problems with the camera, I should send it back...

I will look at EasyN's SDK document and also probably to try to experiment with Ramon's Foscam Clone Recovery that might be able to actually dump all the firmware files from the camera directly: http://blog.morrison.nl/2011/01/foscam-clone-recovery-part-2/

  32. I recently bought a clone off eBay as well with same GUI as what Mike B posted above but with no hint of logo or brand anywhere on box, software, cam or documentation. Gotta say I'm quite disappointed with it though due to bad motion blur both with video and snaphots.

Stationary objects are in focus okay but if anyone/anything moves across field of view, there's quite bad motion trail bluring and certainly not ideal for face regognition.

Have I got a dud unit or is this normal even for genuine Foscams?

    ReplyDelete
  33. @Kretch
I must say that picture quality is just ok but not terrific (although face recognition is possible from not too far). I ended up replacing the lenses of my FI8908w and FI8904w (see posts on this blog). You can find cheap lenses on eBay or DealExtreme.com that made the picture sharper.
Maybe you could compare your picture quality with some of the demos available on youtube.

Mike, did you ever try to upgrade the FW on that DB Power IP camera? Has anybody tried to upgrade that brand?

    Thanks,

    ReplyDelete
  35. Hi,
    @Mike Brinkerhoff

I've bought a clone online (tomtop shop in China) and have the same firmware version as the DB power from Mike but no logo anywhere. The box is the same as Mike too, without the logos.
Camera was working fine for a few days, in wireless, through the web, could connect from my iPhone in 3G, with a decent quality for the price (42 AUS$).
But since a couple of days, the device can't connect in wireless, only through ethernet. I tried with a static IP, DHCP with reservation, with a different wireless network... same. The cam doesn't even try to connect in wifi (can't see any network traffic). Restarted many times, reset a couple of times but still no luck.

    Any idea anyone?
    Firmware upgrade?

    Thanks
    Matt

    Device Firmware Version 0.0.2.1
Device Embeded Web UI Version 0.0.4.9

    ReplyDelete
  36. @Matt
Check first of you didn't change anything in the wireless security: encryption type, passphrase, etc. These thing hate long/complex keys and AP names, so make sure it's simple and short enough.

In some case these cameras have a loose or faulty connection to their external antenna. As a test, try to place the camera beside the router and check if it can connect. If it works in very short range, then it's a antenna issue.
Since you're probably not willing to spend the shipping to return it, you could open the box and check the inner wire going to the antenna and fix it yourself.

Finally, if it's a DBpower, try contacting them http://db-power.com/index.php/contact-us

I don't believe that it is a firmware problem.

    Good luck

  37. @Bubbah
    thanks for your help.
I still don't know what's not working with the WiFi. The SSID - non hidden - is 7-letter long, WPA with 13 characters, all letters and the cam is actually sitting 15cm from the router.
In the web ui of the cam, in the wireless settings, there is a [scan] button which, when pressed a few times, will display the list of available wi-fi network. I can find mine in there, as long as my iPhone hotspot when enabled.
So I guess the wifi does work but it doesn't seem to connect at startup. Correct me if I'm wrong, but if the ethernet cable is plugged-in, the wireless connection is not available, right?
Anyway I've tried setting up the wifi and then rebooting with the ethernet cable out... same issue.
That's why I was incriminating the firmware but who knows..

    ReplyDelete
  38. Hi Matt,
yes, the Wifi only works once the camera reboots just after validating the settings and you must unplug the Ethernet cable early during the countdown. I remember this operation gave me the feeling that my first ip camera had a problem.

With Foscam, there's been an issue where the camera was continuously disconnecting with some routers, but it has been resolved by an update over a year ago. If you can connect with yours but loose the connection, then there could be a need for update and you should identify for sure the manufacturer to get help from them.

But first, make sure you exactly do as explained in my post "Start up guide for new wireless IP camera users"

    ReplyDelete
  39. Hi Bubbah,

I'm about to blame my router now as I managed to make the cam work in wireless with my iPhone's hotspot feature :-/
Took me 2 reboots but did work.
Guess I have to ask a colleague to lend me one for testing :-)

    ReplyDelete
  40. boohoo to me, the router was the problem, camera works perfectly.
Would be curious to find which brand it is and therefore which firmware i can use.

Maybe it's the *router* that needs a firmware update ?

    ReplyDelete
  42. @Bubbah,
nah, it's just that I have a lot of devices connected @home (>10) so the router doesn't like. At to go to a more professional one to handle this amount of wireless and wired connection at the same time.

  44. I have a ip camera similar to the Dealextreme model. Comes in similar box, havent worked out how to get the aerial off to upgrade to a larger high gain version.
The web GUI is limited compared to the genuine Foscam - you cant turn off the Infrared, it is slow to respond to remove control to move the camera, colours are "purplish". At around half the price of the Foscam US$48 delivered, it a cheap camera. Problems with this camera is finding 1) firmware support 2) applications which recognise it as an IP Cam. The application called "Master" which comes with it only works with the camera, it doesnt work with a Foscam. Other mainstream applications contain a list of brand name IP Cams however I haven't been able to find a multi camera application which works with the cheap IP Camera.

On the Maygion web site there is a noting about two models of IP cam. "We have released two types of ipcam(until 09.27.2011): use winbond(arm) cpu chip(from 2008.03 to 2011.03)and use mips cpu chip(start from 2011.04". Following the instructions it says "open ipcam>Control Panel>System Information,if software/hardware has version like "oem mips(date)",your ipcam should be mips hardware. Otherwise, your ipcam should be winbond ipcam." My camera doesnt say OEM mips xx/xx/xx and given I just bought it in June 2012, it's hard to know what model it is.
