The case of Sricam SP series

Dec 5, 2016

Some time ago, I reviewed the IP cameras SP009 and SP012 from Sricam.

Both are based on the same hardware and have the same specification with the addition of Pan and Tilt control for the later model.

These devices use a GM8135S chipset (cheaper Hi3518 equivalent) that is well able to process HD resolution (1280x738).

However, many users have reported that, the Sricam SP series cameras could only send the video stream in 640x360 pixels,
which differs from the samples I received.

Buying this one was a typical case of buy-first-and-think-later reaction, but I got curious about this new compact design (foldable, 77x77x50mm) and also wanted to try an Escam product for once.
A tiny compact ONVIF 2.4.2 compliant camera would be convenient in some situations.

However my hopes were gone seconds away from unpacking the QF601...

The Zeblaze ZeBand Smart wristband looks like a refined version of the Makibes JW018 tested ealier this year.

It has a higher waterproof rating and a dedicated function to measure your swimming performance.

The MI Square Smart IP Camera is the result of another crowdfunding project from Xiaomi.

This 5 cm² IP camera is presented to double as an action camera, although it needs an external power source.

Beside being a full featured IP camera with 1080P resolution, 110° wide view, IR-Cut, night vision and 8x digital zoom, it also supports time lapse and is designed to work on the go. The camera can operate as a standalone Wi-Fi access point and a power bank can be used instead of the 5V/1A power supply. It sticks to any metallic surface, or to another MI Square, with its magnetic base.

As part of the original features is the possibility to combine 2 cameras in order to increase the viewing angle from 110° to 180°.

The Mi Square can also react to specific sound patterns, like a smoke detector alarm (it's not specified if it works only with the hard to find Xiaomi Home kit)

Xiaomi MI Square can be pre-ordered at Gearbest and will start shipping on the 3rd of January 2017.

The first Wanscam product I reviewed last year left a very good impression.
The HW0049 is the latest addition in the HW series.

The "smart sleep" function is a convenient battery-saving feature that turns off the display when the cover is closed, but with the cheap cases, that the magnet is too strong and also turns off the screen when the cover is folded behind the device.
This can be easily solved at very low cost.

IP Cameras are getting increasingly smart, easy to use and affordable.

They are convenient security add-ons but they also have potential to be exactly the opposite!

Are you the only one watching your cameras?

This is not a smoke detector, but it is hardly a usable IP camera either!

What were they thinking?

If you ever wished that you could add download tasks to your Download Station directly from any page in Chrome, (iow without having to go to the DSM interface), this is now possible with this neat extension.

The No1 G5 Smart Watch is an eye catching gadget, with a stylish design and a low price. That's enough to trigger an impulsive order, but is it a keeper?

The Elecam Explorer Elite 4K is another action camera claiming to be 4K, like the AMK7000S did.
This model claims to record in 4k at 24fps**.

Sorry Gearbest, I won't review this one...

Whoever designed this thing must be nuts!

You’re probably here because you’re wondering what to get for Father’s Day. Well, this hasn’t always been the month for novelty ties, personalised beer mugs and hi-tech ‘manly’ gadgets that it is today. Did you know that the traditional gift for dads is actually a rose – the official flower for Father’s Day (carnations are for Mother’s Day).

Man meets gadget, falls in love, the end. It’s a never-ending love story but gadgets have come a long way. No longer are they the preserve of men and no longer are they the throw-away items bought for Father’s Day and quickly forgotten. They’ve moved on. They’re serious business: don’t think boy and his toy, think Dad and his Drone.
There’s a lot of talk at the moment about the future of artificial intelligence (AI) and what it means for our lives and our jobs. AI has definitely become more advanced in recent years, with Google recently announcing Assistant, a real alternative to Siri. But is AI now evolving from something that improves our lives as well as our jobs? Let’s take a look at the cool ways AI is changing the workplace …

It's been a while since I used one of these mini IP cameras built around the Hi3518 chipset.

So what make this yet-another-cheaper-like-there's-so-many-out-there camera different?

A major improvement in Synology Surveillance Station came in almost unnoticed (at least from me) since the release 7.1-4056.

For years, users have begged Synology to implement a way to add RTSP URL's.

The reason: most P2P entry-level IP Cameras don't come with an HTTP server anymore.

Synology has finally granted our wish!

The Makibes F68 is one of the cheapest Smart Watches available with a heart rate sensor.

I decided to try it just to see if it could be of any use in real life.
